Limits:  There is a limit of 300 visitors to the island per day.  Reservations are recommended.

Program: Public Archaeology Weekend at the Historic Winn House

Description: The public is invited to participate in excavations at the Creekside Rock Shelter where Lamar pottery and a period trade bead have previously been recovered.  There will also be a dig with pottery restoration for younger children.  On Saturday only, the historic Winn House will be open for tours and will feature a display of artifacts from previous digs at the Winn House along with those from GARS’ continuing investigations at the site of early frontier site Fort Daniel.  There will also be a Fort Daniel bake sale fundraiser.

Lecture:  Archaeological Research in Prehistoric Northern Greece:  “The Ancient Greek World and its Margin”

Description:  Dr. Despina Margomenou will give a PowerPoint presentation about recent research projects she participated in and directed in Greece, Serbia, and Crete.  This research of unstudied parts of Greece and the Balkans includes work she directed on the Northern Greek Storage Project.  It included analysis of organic residue found in containers and storage devices, from the Bronze Age onward.  She also directed the analysis of Neolithic pottery from an excavation of the Palace of Knossos on Crete.

Description:. Discover the town’s rich history which grew out of the red clay that gave the City of Auburn its name.  Once an Indian settlement, the town’s fortunes have risen and fallen with the industries and people who have made their home here.  Walk where the Union Army camped and see the traces left behind from the people who lived and worked in the shops and residences that rose during the days when Auburn was a booming railroad town and once home to Perry-Rainy College.

Program: Digging Into the Past

Description: Activities will consist of an “archaeological dig,” a “sunken treasure” hunt, a time capsule, plus displays of rocks and maps, and “goodie bags” and handouts.  Emphasis will be on Georgia history and archaeology.  Youth will go from station to station both indoors and outdoors and will get their “Archaeology Card” stamped at each station.  Upon completing their card, they will redeem it for a goodie bag.

Program:  Archaeology Day

Description:  Archaeologists and members of the Augusta Archaeological Society will be on hand to identify artifacts and to formally record PaleoIndian and Dalton period projectile points.  There will be flint knapping and primitive skills/weapon demonstrations, local area artifacts will be exhibited, and instruction will be given in the proper reporting of archaeological sites.  Free tours of the Ezekiel Harris House will also be available.
